evening. breaking news tonight in new york, where after days without power from hurricane sandy, the lights are beginning to slowly go back on in lower manhattan and beyond. it is slow, but it is happening. mayor michael bloomberg says most of the power in manhattan should return by midnight tonight, although some people will be left without it for another week. sandy is gone, but misery continues as so many devastated. today the death toll climbed to 97 people. staten island neighborhoods swept away. homeland security secretary janet napolitano toured the area, vowing to do everything she could to help. plus, after insisting this sunday's new york city marathon would go on, mayor bloomberg canceled the race. many were outraged the city would take valuable efforts away from the recovery efforts for the marathon. tonight, city hall and race officials have called it off. meanwhile, look at this. cars lined up for miles to get gas. drivers in some cases waiting 20 hours as the supply dwindles, fighting with each other. there's one report that a guy pulled a gun at one gas station.

is the gas shortage crippling new jersey and new york after hurricane sandy brought much of the northeast to a standstill. state troopers and local police have deploy to the remaining gas stations in the new york city metro area and still have gas and power, those few that do, as agonizingly long lines have frayed the nerves and are now adding to the problems that are gripping residents who are now entering their fourth night without power or heat. most gas stations in the region remain closed. those that are open are facing very angry customers that are forced to wait hours to have a chance to fill up their cars. the temperatures in the northeast are dropping. mass transit in both states is barely running and driving around on already congested city is becoming downright perilous. we are hearing reports of violence with one queens man, reportedly pulling a gun on another motorist at a gas station. here in new york city, local news stations are reporting that residents are digging through dumpsters for food. where is president obama? after his photohelpop with chris christie, he boards fa

for thousands of people who are still without power after the nor'easter and superstorm sandy. gas rationing is now in effect in parts of new york and new jersey to reduce long lines. gas stations are remaining open longer and drivers can only buy gas on alternate days. thousands of terrified syrian civilians are fleeing into turkey as fighting rages near the border between both countries. the violence has turkey's military on high alert. syrian rebels are claiming victory against syria's military at a keyboard border town. seized syrian government buildings and captured control of a border crossing into turkey. chrysler is recalling nearly one million of jeep suvs in the u.s., canada, mexico and other countries. it wants to fix a faulty control part that could cause air bags to inflate while the vehicles are in motion. the recall affects jeep grand cherokees for the model years 2002 through 2004 and liberty suvs for the model years 2002 and 2003. of course other big news you're following as well, wolf. >> huge news, thanks very much, lisa. drawing the line, the president and the house speak

. >> new york governor andrew cuomo made it a bit easier for sandy-affected residents to vote tomorrow. new jersey voters can also download a ballot and return their vote by fax or e-mail. reports of some form of voter irregularity are already happening in key battleground states in florida. lawyers for the florida democratic party settled a lawsuit today. voters waited in record long lines prompting officials in those three counties have agreed to allow voters to cast in person absentee ballots. long lines also persisted in ohio today where the number of early voting weekends were reduced from five to just one. ohio secretary of state john husted issued a directive last friday requiring voters to complete the identification section on provisional ballots rather than poll workers. if the form is not filled out correctly, then the ballot is not counted, democrats countered with an emergency motion. a federal judge in ohio will hold a hearing on the matter wednesday, the morning after the election. and in pennsylvania, civil rights and other community groups have sent a letter to assistant u.

to survive hurricane sandy and was picked out in new jersey and had to tie it up quickly right before the storm hit to protect it from the storm because they didn't want to have to pick out a new tree. it survived, of course, sitting here and it'll be later on this evening. we had a messy day yesterday. wasn't pretty, the airports had problems too. now as we go throughout the day it's cold in the wake of the norm. for the tree lighting it will be chilly. windchill, 32 and we will see the temperature itself somewhere right around 39. as far as the roads go after that little snow and rain yesterday, secondary roads could have a minor issue but later no problems at the airports. no travel issues whatsoever, we'll see highs in the 40s all through the northeast. rest of the country looks chilly. windchills cool seeing them around the rest of the nation especially in the midwest in the teens. even texas a little cold but the big weather story over the next three days if you are traveling to the west coast, you're not going to see typical west coast weather. it is going to be very cold over

should note is that the devastating impact of hurricane sandy is still being felt by families all across new york, new jersey, parts of connecticut, we are very pleased that under the leadership initially of janet napolitano and fema, but now shaun donovan heading up the task force, we're focusing not only on recovery, but now on rebuilding. and making sure those communities come back stronger than ever, people get the help they need. so that will be an important topic because it is really going to be an interagency concern. second thing that we'll be talking about obviously is what is on the minds of a lot of american families across the country, that is making sure we get this fiscal cliff dealt with, and that middle class taxes don't go up. i already spoke extensively about that today. i'll just repeat, there is no reason why taxes on middle class families should go up. it would be bad for the economy, it would be bad for the families. the fact it would be bad for the world economy. and i think it is very important we get that resolved and i am very open to a fair and balanced approac
